Time Is Not On Your Side by Jamie Zirkle

The famous song, “Time is on your side”, was recorded by the Jazz trombonist Kai Winding and his Orchestra on the Verve Records label in October 1963.

The first fully vocal version was recorded by the New Orleans Soul singer Irma Thomas.

However, it was the Rolling Stones who would eventually make the song famous.

Time is on my side, yes it is
Time is on my side, yes it is

No, it’s not. Time flies by way too fast. It seems just like yesterday when my son was born on Groundhog Day of 2006. It seems just like yesterday when I would rock him to sleep on the nights that my wife had to work. It seems just like yesterday when we would throw all of the blankets and pillows on the floor and play knee football in the living room. It seems just like yesterday when he touched the ocean for the first time. It seems just like yesterday when he walked into kindergarten.

It was just yesterday when my son walked into third grade. Where has the time gone?

I have been blessed with jobs that have enabled me to be home just about every night of the week. Some of those jobs, including the one I have now, are not in my career path but I would not trade my time with my son for any amount of money. I know for some of you dads you are not able to be there for your children as much as you would like. Maybe your job takes you on the road. Maybe you are in the military and are deployed as you read this article. Maybe you are separated or divorced and can only see them at limited times. Or, just maybe you work unnecessarily too much.

May I encourage all of you men in one thing? Time is the most precious gift that you can give your children. My son and I were wrestling the other day and while in the midst of him having me in a headlock he said, “Wrestling with my daddy is the most fun I’ve had all day.” Life doesn’t get any better than spending time with your children.

Now, I know that I’m speaking to a wide audience with a variety of circumstances. I don’t have an easy button to make it all better. But, I serve a God who does. If you give Him your time He will make a way where there seems to be no way. Yes, He can.

Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.”

Take the time to read a book to your child. Take the time to put them to bed. Take the time to make that phone call. Take the time to make that visit. Take the time to pray for your children.

Don’t let time pass you by. Make time be on your side!
