So this is Christmas, and what have you done
Another year over, and a new one just begun
And so this is Christmas, I hope you have fun
The near and the dear ones, the old and the young
A very merry Christmas and a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one without any fear
Originally written by John Lennon and Yoko Ono as a protest song against the Vietnam War it has since become one of the great Christmas songs. Personally, it is one of my favorites.
Unfortunately, in our current culture, there is a whole new war going on against Christmas. Public schools no longer call it a Christmas vacation. It is now a “winter holiday.” Christmas trees are referred to as holiday trees. In some cases the manger scene is not even allowed to be displayed publicly. And the zillion shopping commercials also refer to it as “holiday shopping.” Meanwhile, we Christians hijack Facebook with our “keep the Christ in Christmas” chants and we are inundated with negative messages on how the Turkey is offended by Santa because Wal-Mart already has their Christmas decorations up for sale. Where is the Joy to the World in all of this?
So, THIS is Christmas?
No, THAT is not Christmas.
THIS is Christmas. A baby by the name of Jesus was born to a virgin named Mary. People traveled from all around to see the birth of Peace on Earth. We don’t know the actual date of his birth so we chose December 25th to throw a big party for him. I’m sure He doesn’t mind. Churches will be filled with the colors of red, green, and gold on the night before His birthday. Candles will be lit and kids will want to play with fire. In unity and in one accord we will sing out so many of our well known Christmas songs.
Moms and Dads will be together with their children. Grandparents will be with their grandchildren. And little Johnny will be so annoyed by his clip on tie that he will make it his mission to harass his little sister. Goosebumps will abound as the lights are dimmed and Silent Night is sung by candlelight. THIS is Christmas.
I hope that all of you can find some joy this Christmas. Most of you have lost a loved one and it’s during this time that their memory becomes a bit more vivid. I understand. I miss my mom, my grandmother, and two grandfathers as well. But, enjoy the time that you have with the ones that you love. Be a little more patient with them. Take in the smiles on your children’s faces and just relax. It’s not about me or you anyway. It’s about celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
So, THIS is Christmas? Yes it is!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
