Driving home from a recent men’s event, I called my wife to let her know what time I’d be home. She said that she would stay up until I got home. Knowing that it was going to be late and that she would have to work in the morning, I told her to go to bed. Two people loving each other but you see, satan had other plans, he always does.
As the conversation continued, I told her to go to bed, trying to love my wife like Christ loved the church (Eph 5:25 NASB - Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her,) As much as I wanted to see her when I got home, I knew she needed her sleep.
She trying to love me said that she would stay up till I got home… and that’s when satan entered the picture. Each of us were trying to love the other – I wanting my wife to get the much needed sleep for her work the next day, she trying to love me and support me by being there when I got home. With each passing minute, the conversation began to turn.
“Go to bed!” I said, she said, “I’m staying up!” It was then that I began to see how satan can disguise himself as an angel of light. (2 Corinthians 11:14 No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.)
Here we were just trying to love on each other, and yet satan used our love to turn against each other. So often, men and women who are joined as one, can be led off track simply by trying to love each other – I know it sounds crazy and weird but that’s exactly what satan will do – turn our love into an argument – the key of course is making sure that we are aware of his schemes, especially in the bond of marriage.
In a world where over 50% of marriages end in divorce, we need all the tools we can get to keep our love alive and from going from love to an argument. So rather than continue to disagree, we simple said, do what you feel God is leading you. I knew that whether my wife was up when I got home or not, she loved me, and she knew that whether she stayed up or went to bed, I loved her. The key of course is to be alert as husbands to the tricks of satan that can turn our love into an argument.
