One True God

It was the day of the big showdown. Think Old West—the showdown at the OK Corral.

On the one hand, you had King Ahab, Queen Jezebel, and all of the priests of Baal.

On the other side was Elijah, a lone prophet who came out of hiding to stand against the forces of evil and prove that there was only One True God.

You can almost hear the eerie cowboy music playing in the background as people gathered around to see, not a shootout, but rather a pray-off.

Each side would petition their god. The god who answered by fire would be recognized as the God of Israel.

Elijah let the other side go first. With great hoopla, the priest of Baal prayed, they wailed, they even cut themselves and carried on most of the day with no response.

After hours in the blazing sun, it was Elijah’s turn. In my mind, Elijah’s sounded like John Wayne as he said, “Let’s make this a real show, Pilgrims. Pour 12 buckets of water on my altar.”

Then he prayed. The One True Living God answered by sending fire to consume not only the altar but all the water around it. Once again, proving there is only One True God, all other gods are lifeless, worthless, man-made imitations.

Of course, this is just one example of a truth revealed throughout the Bible: there is only One True God—the God of the Bible.

Everything else that calls itself “god” is simply manufactured and worthless. As it says in Isaiah 44:6-22: “humans invent these ideas in their heads, go out and build a god of wood or iron, then worship it. Yet, they never think, “Why am I worshipping something I created that has no power and has done nothing for me?”

Still, the problem continues through time. Humans pursue the worship of many gods, deities, and religions that are simply the invention of other human beings rather than acknowledge that there is only One True God. They continue to waste their time and energy and jeopardize their eternity serving other religions and worshipping false gods.

Today, the popular thing to do is say, “You can serve whatever god you want. As long as you have faith in a higher power and are a good person, it’s good.”

Our society, and even many who call themselves Christians, have fallen for the lie that all religions are the same. They say all roads lead to Heaven.

However, this is not true.

Today, more than ever, we need men of God to stand up in the legendary spirit of Elijah and declare, “There is only One True God—the God of the Bible.”

As it says in Deuteronomy 4:39: “To you it was shown, that you might know that the Lord is God; there is no other besides him...now therefore today, and lay it to your heart, that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other.” (Deuteronomy 4:35, 39 ESV)

Again, 1 Corinthians 8:5-6 says, “For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth—as indeed there are many ‘gods’ and many ‘lords’— yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.” (1 Corinthians 8:5-6, ESV)

We need men willing to stand like Elijah firm in this conviction. Men who will lead their families, their friends, their communities, and even misguided souls in their churches away from false gods and participating in false religions and into the truth that there is One True God. Period.

Weekly Memory Verse:

“For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth—as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”— yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.” 1 Corinthians 8:5-6, ESV
