I love fantasy football! Especially dynasty fantasy football, where you keep your same team each year and draft rookies. I don't have many hobbies, but this is definitely one of them. I listen to podcasts about fantasy football. I read about it. I make lists of rookies I want to draft, ranking them in the order I would take them, always drafting the best player available.
The only part of fantasy football I do not like is when we have our yearly rookie draft. We have what is called a “slow draft”, where each team has twenty-four hours to make their picks before the next team can pick. Of course, you don't have to wait the full twenty-four hours. It's a way to make sure everyone gets to make a pick within their schedule.
I HATE IT! I do not have the patience for this. I know exactly who I want to draft and want to get right at it. Each year when we draft, I am always reminded of how I need to keep developing the Fruit of the Spirit of patience.
I also am reminded of this in traffic. I hate traffic. It drives me insane. What drives me even more insane is when other people have no patience and ride in the merge lane forever, thinking they are more important than everyone else and don't have to wait their turn. Again, patience is an issue both for them and myself.
Patience is essential for a man of God to put into practice in his life. It is one of the fruits of the Spirit.
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law." (Galatians 5:22-23, ESV)
The Greek word for patience is "makrothymia." It means "patience, forbearance, internal and external control in a difficult circumstance, which control could exhibit itself by delaying an action:– patience."
God wants His men to develop and practice patience in all areas of their life.
-When your wife is taking forever to get ready.
-When your kids take an eternity to understand what you are teaching them.
-When an employee is struggling to learn the work system.
-When an employer is taking his good old time to start a meeting.
-When a doctor is behind schedule and late to take you for an appointment.
-When traffic is throwing off your ETA.
The list goes on and on.
Daily, life presents us with areas to work on developing patience. It affects so much of our lives.
1 Corinthians 13:4 and Ephesians 4:2 tell us that patience is a huge part of love.
Romans 12:12 tells us that patience helps us in times of tribulation as we wait for God's deliverance.
Romans 8:25 lets us know patience is a component of faith.
No wonder it is a Fruit of the Spirit. It is essential. It is an area I am constantly working on, and I know I'm not alone. Let's all develop patience so we can truly show the world we are godly men.
