Belt of Truth

For many years, the church taught we were to get up every morning and read this Scripture saying, “I choose to put on the belt of truth, the helmet of salvation, etc…”   As you got dressed, you would be choosing to put on the armor of God as well.

However, it seems the Apostle Paul intended more than just reciting a few words each morning.   Practically applying this principle must involve a change of heart and the choice to make these spiritual virtues a part of our life.

So what does each article of clothing mean for us? Let’s start with the Belt of Truth.

Like a buckle holds up our pants, truth puts and keeps everything in its proper place. It is the foundational garment that holds everything else together.  Truth is consistent---it never changes.  It has a stabilizing effect on our lives.

If you want to successfully overcome enemy’s attacks, you’ve got to start with the foundation of choosing to live each day, walking in, believing, and wearing truth.

This is not easy. Everywhere we look, lies surround us.  Constantly, we are lied to about what is normal, healthy, and socially acceptable.  Even some churches tell us to compromise our moral standards in the spirit of tolerance.

However, there are absolutes.

There is only One God Who created the world and is still in control of it.

He sent His Only Son, Jesus, to die on the cross and redeem mankind from their sins.

The Bible is God’s Word.  It speaks the ultimate truth.   Within its pages, sin and the path to salvation is clearly defined.

We need to keep these truths of our faith forefront of our minds, and not allow ourselves to be deceived by the lies of a culture telling us otherwise.  When we lose sight of these truths and let lies put us into a state of spiritual anesthesia, we lose the very essence of who we are as Christians.   We stop being light in a dark world because we’re more comfortable blending in.

No wonder our enemy is working overtime, trying to get us to replace these truths with lies!   It is up to us to choose each day to buckle up with truth!

Memory Verse: Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32, NIV)
